The Myth of Exclusive Monogamous Morality (Part II) June 17, 2010
This is the second instalment of my attempt to address the oft-asked question as to why people, especially (mainly) men "cheat" or seem unable to "commit" to our spouses/partners. The short answer is of course because we can; we made the rules – for us – and because there is very little about monogamy that is natural or moral anyway.

On the Tiger Woods "Affair" and the Myth of Exclusive Monogamous Morality (Part I) April 15, 2010
Over the last few months one of the main stories in the news was an incident involving golfing legend Tiger Woods, his wife and another woman with whom Woods had a secret relationship (well, secret until the mark buss, as we say in Trinidadian parlance). As more and more of the story unfolded, it was revealed that Woods had been engaging in sexual dalliances with not only that woman, but quite a number of other women, some apparently romantic...

Well a Woman is Almost There
- So wha bout the politics now?
March 02, 2010
On the 24th January an interesting but not unexpected shift in the politics occurred when Kamla Persad-Bissessar was voted in as political leader of the United National Congress dethroning the charismatic veteran leader and founder of the party, Basdeo Panday. This paved the way for her being sworn in as Leader of the Opposition on the 25th February. Kamla's victory is significant in more ways than one.

What Were you Expecting from Minister Le Gendre? July 10, 2008
I just had to comment on last Sunday's Express article by Ms Sheila Rampersad in which she expressed her great disappointment over Education Minister Esther Le Gendre's attack on Mickela Panday in Parliament. With all due respect to Ms Rampersad, I found her expectations of Ms Le Gendre and indeed the whole idea of women's solidarity in our political context were naive to say the least.

On Albright's "Lost" Aura of Democracy January 13, 2008
I really loved the well-written article by former Secretary of State Madeleine (shouldn't that be Meddlin?) Albright on the Trinidad Express on Friday 11th January. Such hubris, such hypocrisy compressed into twelve paragraphs. It was exactly the sort of historically decontextualised drivel I have come to expect from North Atlantic political figures (although, given what passes for local journalism and radio talk, it has spread here as well).

A Rejoiner to the Refutation of Adam and Eve November 24, 2006
My comrade Tyehimba's essay on Refuting the Myth of Adam and Eve raised very important points that in my view are not discussed nearly enough as we set about the business of hammering out a Caribbean civilisation and reconstructing the Africa as we knew it to be. I wish to further add to his contribution by calling into question something I think he himself should have paid more attention to: the psychological, social and political impact of the historicising of the Adam and Eve story, indeed the entire Old Testament as well as the New Testament and its central figure.

President Richards' Laments About Foreign Values October 18, 2006
On October 6th, during an inter-faith service, President George Maxwell Richards gave a speech lamented the creeping influx of foreign values and cultures into our country. According to the Express newspaper, President Richards "spoke of mass media images of 'glitter and glamour' and 'easy living' from foreign metropolitan areas', which young people are bombarded with..." and that "many young people, faced with these images, were willing to give up their heritage."

A reply to the Trinity Cross issue June 08, 2006
I have no doubt and am certain that Ms Edwards is correct in her assertions that certain elements within Trinidad's Hindu and (perhaps less) the Muslim community are pushing a narrow agenda with regard to the re-naming of this nation's highest award.
